Summit Meeting
That sounds like an exciting title, doesn't it? I can almost see the C-SPAN logo when I here the words "summit meeting." It's probably a good thing they didn't run title cards with Voltron--I might not've watched this epsiode back in '84.
We open with--Galaxy Garrison. They are discussing problems in the Denubian Galaxy. This is the first time Lion Voltron makes any mention of Drule, identifying Zarkon as a Drule outlaw.
Four starships are parked in front of the castle of lions. A fifth lands as we watch. Coran is chairing the summit meeting. There's prince Bandor, some guy from Yadle (hey, they remembered), and then the rest of the leaders are made up because WEP couldn't remember that they're from Amazonia, the Sand Planet, and Mura. And the kid from Amazonia apparently looked like a girl to someone, because B.J. Ward voices him--as a girl, not in her little boy voice. Anyway, they vow to resist Zarkon together.
We get a nice nightscape of the Arusian village. The team minus the princess plus Coran are airing their worries in the rec room. They can't resort to attacking Zarkon (except they have, sort of). Coran believes he should take the princess' place. They all seem to agree that, um, while Coran shouldn't take Allura's place, they can train a substitute. Waaah? Then Keith is looking out the window and Coran goes on about a bunch of disjointed stuff.
We then cut to Marshall Keezor at the Drule frontline base. He's here to sentence Hazar to--erm, no he's got a request from Zarkon. He wants support troops for an all-out assault. Hazar says to let him train his slaves to fight for him.
Zarkon and Lotor plan to attack during the summit meeting. Then they start talking about some plot that sounds like it takes place on Arus from the dialogue, but is at a totally different castle. A robot ship with a robot ambassador is to be robot-assassinated. Lotor wants to negotiated with Allura; Zarkon says he has the appeal of a salamander. Haggar urges Zarkon to let him go.
The team has assembled the lions in the desert. They're now going to search out and challenge the forces of evil. Er, what was that about Voltron only being a defense force? Keith then tries to talk Allura out of being a part of Voltron. But she says it's the most important thing in the universe. And then abruptly Keith sends her to the black lion.
The members of the summit meeting are looking over Coran's shoulder in castle control as Allura orders the lions to launch, and then black lion refuses to respond. Apparently it's been . . . sabotaged. Then it runs real fast into a cliff stuns Allura. She comes to, pushes some buttons, and then black lion runs into another cliff, knocking her out. She sees a vision where Voltron is face with two magenta balls of light. Clawed hands come out of the light and pummel Voltron. Allura suddenly comes to in her room and sees King Alfor ex machina who tells her to flee the castle as Lotor comes. The hell--?!
Keith sees Allura running outside. She runs to a waterfall, takes time to meditate, then keeps running--right past the blue cat and Lotor. She is nearing the church (y'know, the one where her funeral was held) when Lotor jumps out of the trees in front of her. She shoots at him, but he just keeps talking. And then disarms her. Keith appears. Allura pulls free of Lotor and runs behind Keith. Lotor brings a sword to a gunfight, dodges and deflects Keith's shots, and hits him with the sword.
The blue cat is holding Allura back. An injured Keith (it's laser shock!) drives off the cat before collapsing in Allura's arms.
Lotor reports to Zarkon, who gets snarky, and then sends Lotor back with a robeast.
The team is watching over the injured Keith when Lotor returns and deploys the robeast. It starts bombarding the castle and all the summit leaders start panicking. Then there's weird dialogue about retreating inland. The princess deploys in black lion (the only one with brains or balls in this episode, apparently), but one lion isn't enough against this robeast. For some reason, the team waits until Bandor comes in to decide to join her. Keith pulls himself out of bed and they all go to Allura's aid.
The robeast looms over black lion--and explosions from behind knock it over. The other four lions join the battle. They form voltron. They use the Golion openiong animation.
Voltron throws the spinning laser blades, stringray missiles, and then the electro-force cross. The robeast deflects all of the attacks, then grabs Voltron, punches him, and lands on him, grappling at Voltrons' throat. Allura fires the neutron needles in the robeast's face, distracting it, and then they form the blazing sword and you know how it goes by now. Lotor leaves, going "I'll get you, Gadget!" as usual.
The summit leaders form an alliance against Zarkon and they all shake hands in castle control, in front of the victorious Voltron force.
The Seven Free Planets
So the members of the summit meeting are a little more clear here. The new arrival is Duran of Amazon, who is greeting by Commander Mac of Mura. The other Leo Alliance members are Fala for Altea, Kogane for Earth, Bohan for Jarre, and Harvard for the sand planet. Presumably, there are still Earthlings imprisoned on Galra, so that's why Kogane even bothers to represent a planet that no longer exists. Amue and Ryou have sent messages endoring the alliance from their resistance cell on Galra. Wow. This seems pretty well-written and developed to me. Not like some cartoon hacked together to sell toys.
Anyway, the members of the Leo Alliance want Fala to lead, though she resists at first. The discussion in the rec room isn't about finding a substitute for Fala, as in Voltron, it's about putting Fala in black lion. This may explain why the team acts stupid later on, but maybe not. We'll see later.
Back on Galra, Daibazaal is incensed that 42 planets have begun breaking away from the empire. Sincline, on the other hand, has already begun schemes to stop the rebels. Then we get an awesome montage of assassinations. We see 5 in total.
Sincline makes mention of the "directors"--these must be the guys I've been calling the council. It makes sense.
Kogane prepares the team to train with Fala in the lead. Naturally, Kurogane is a prick. Kogane assures Fala that he really does believe that she's ready for black lion. D'awww . . .
Fala is running (and meditating under the waterfall) because her father's ghost urges her to train more. I guess that makes more sense.
When Sincline slashes Kogane, he has a moment where he crows in triumph "I finally beat Kogane!" They make it clear that Kogane is more badly wounded than in Voltron. And Daibazaal is pleased with this turn of events--they can see the end of Golion.
So, Kogane is wounded, so the rest of the guys just sit around and go, "Nope. Can't fight." What th--?!?!
They use the black lion theme again in forming Golion.
The beastman isn't named in the dialogue, but it has a big 'Z' on its chest, so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and call it Mecha Beastman Zeta. It also does the Kaiju roar. And Golion's neutron needles are called "needle pod." Like machinegun pod.
Galra is vanquished again, and there was much rejoicing.
